Road Trip – “Are We There Yet?”

October 27th, 2011

Fall always holds a special place in my heart.  I love the changing of the colors in the trees, the cool crisp mornings that give way to sunny warm afternoons and college football.

This past weekend my wife and I and the kids had the opportunity to head down to Boise and take in the Boise State/Air Force football game.  My parents have been season ticket holders at BSU dating back to when I was a thumb sucking little boy who loved to carry around his favorite blankey while wearing my one piece yellow flannel pajamas complete with the non skid white feet.  And no, that was not last week for those of you who have an opportunistic sense of humor.

The plan was to head down on Friday for what I envisioned to be a visually pleasant drive through parts of Idaho, Washington and Oregon.  Vanessa and I were both looking forward to spending some quality time with the kids and what could be better than an 8 hour drive to Boise?  We could stop off at many of the beautiful view points along the way, play slug bug, have a picnic lunch, and perhaps even sing a song or two from the Sound of Music soundtrack.  Ah, that sure does sound nice, right?

If I may, I would like to stop at this point and apologize to my parents Reed and Jean Nate for all of the idyllic road trips that they had envisioned for our family before my sister and I created the environment for which I was about to experience with our kids.  That being said, Mom, Dad please forgive the young childish boy who made many a road trip a living  H-E-Double Hockey Sticks for you.  I am sorry.

Without getting into too much detail, I will offer a quick rundown of the 8 hour tour.  Are we there yet?   How many times do I have to count to 60 before we are there?  How many more songs do we need to listen to before we are there?  Mom, are we there yet?  I wish I had a sister instead of a brother!  How would you like it if I did this to you?  I have had enough, neither of you are going to play when we get home!  Are we there yet?  What state are we in?  No Fair! You stay on your side and you stay on yours!  Keep your hands to yourself!  I love you honey, you ok?  Are we there yet?  Yep.  Are we there yet?  Yep.  Stop it, you are upsetting the Dog!  That is it I am going to get a sister for Christmas!  It was at that time I turned to my wife and asked her if there is something that I should know.

After 8 long hours we finally made it toBoise.  Whoo-hoo!!

In all honesty the road trip was all part of the bonding experience and I bring it up as a reminder that kids will be kids and one day soon they will be all grown up and won’t want to go on road trips with us old folks anymore.  So treasure the Are We There Yet moments while you have them.

The game and quality time with my family definitely overshadowed the car journey we made to get there.  The kids were able to attend their first big time college football game, complete with a photo op with Buster the Bronco, a four jet fly over after the national anthem, hot dogs and nacho chips with processed cheese, all capped off with an exciting BSU win over Air Force.  It was a wonderful weekend filled with new experiences, bonding time with my family, Grandma and Grandpa got to spoil their grandkids, and the discovery of new answers to some time tested questions.

By the way it takes approximately 13 songs to get from just outside of Ontario, OR to Boise, you would have to count to 60 forty times to go the same distance, and no Sydney will not be getting a sister for Christmas.

I would love to hear about some of your road trip stories, so please post your story below.  The top 3 stories will receive a prize and be automatically entered into our FREE Apple iPad2 drawing.
